Engaging Reading Approaches

DSC00818.JPG

Different strategies of reading are more effective for memory retention and learning engagement. The following practices are the approaches that we train instructors to use.

ENGANGING CHILDREN IN READING

PRE-READING DISCUSSION

  • Discuss book cover's title and images

  • Ask children what they think the book will be about

READING THE STORY

  • Be dramatic and change the tone and inclinations of voice

  • Pause and ask kids what they think will happen

  • Ask questions about the story as you are reading (ie. "Why is the frog sad?")

  • Write new vocabulary words on board and teach students how to use the words in sentences

  • Ask children to use new vocabulary words when responding to questions

CONCLUDING THE STORY

  • Ask children for comments about the story

  • Ask what their favorite and least favorite part was

  • Ask questions about the story (ie. Which character would you want to meet in real life?)

  • Ask students to retell the story in their own words
